Refresh or Redesign? How to Know What Your Website Really Needs

By Caroline Cruise

Your website is often the first interaction someone has with your organization. As your digital home base, it plays a critical role in establishing credibility, communicating your value and driving conversions — whether that’s making a purchase or donation, filling out a form or learning more about your services.

A strong website should be easy to navigate, mobile-friendly and kept up to date with accurate information. Deciding where to start when updating your site can feel overwhelming. Do you just need some targeted tweaks, or is it time to completely revamp your site?

To get started, I’ll walk you through the key differences between a website refresh and a full redesign, and help you figure out which path is right for your organization.

Website Refresh

A website refresh focuses on updating the look and content of your existing site without changing its underlying structure. The platform, functionality and content management system typically remain the same.

A refresh usually involves updating visual elements such as color schemes, typography, imagery and on-page content. It’s less about structural changes and more about modernizing and polishing what’s already in place. Because the underlying infrastructure stays the same, refreshes are typically faster and less expensive than a full redesign.

Website Redesign

A redesign is a complete rebuild of your website. This process often includes restructuring the site’s information architecture, updating navigation, adding new content, redesigning page layouts and sometimes moving to a new content management platform.

Redesigns are an opportunity to significantly improve user experience by rethinking how visitors move through your site. They can also address deeper issues such as slow loading speeds, accessibility barriers or poor mobile responsiveness.

Upgrading the underlying technology can also improve performance, security and scalability, helping ensure your website supports your organization’s long-term goals.

How to Decide What Your Website Needs

1. Evaluate Your Current Website

Start with a quick user experience audit. Ask questions like:

  • Do pages load quickly?

  • Is the site mobile-friendly?

  • Is it easy to find key information?

Tools like Google Lighthouse can help assess page performance and usability. Website analytics are also helpful indicators; if users leave quickly, spend little time on your site or rarely convert, there may be deeper issues to address.

If possible, gather feedback from your audience. Understanding what users like — and where they get stuck — can reveal valuable insights.

2. Define Your Goals

After evaluating your current site, you should have a clearer picture of what you want to achieve and the level of work required. For example, if your main objective is improving Search Engine Optimization (SEO) or Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) visibility, a refresh may be enough. Updating content with new keywords, adding meta tags and alt text and ensuring information is current can go a long way.

However, if your site structure is confusing or difficult to navigate, a redesign may be necessary. The same is true if your content management system is outdated or limiting your ability to update and expand the site. In general, we recommend a full redesign every 2–5 years depending on your business’ growth, user expectations and design and technology trends.

3. Consider Budget and Timeline

Refreshes typically require less time and investment because they focus on updating content and visual elements rather than rebuilding the entire site. On the other hand, redesigns take more time and resources, but they can deliver a strong return on investment — especially if your current website no longer supports your organization’s needs.

Whether you choose a website refresh or full redesign, keeping your site up to date, user-friendly and optimized for SEO and GEO is essential for connecting with your audience.
